Description:

Comprises fourteen (14) book extracted plates and two (2) title pages from the 1838 Brussels edition of Œuvres complètes de Buffon, issued by Th. Lejeune and representing material from the “Planches” atlas for Buffon and Daubenton’s landmark natural history series. The group includes nine plates from Histoire naturelle de l’Homme (Homme 1–8, 15), notable for their early anthropological and anatomical imagery, together with five plates from Théorie de la Terre et Histoire des Minéraux (Terre 1, 2, 3, 5, 6), illustrating geological concepts and mineralogical forms. Executed as finely printed 19th century engravings, several with original handcoloring, these plates reflect the scientific ambition and visual rigor that defined Buffon’s influential contribution to Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment natural history. Each page measures appx. 9”H x 5 7/8” H. All plates show age appropriate wear with some showing minor foxing.
