Description:

Mid 20th century Japanese Hironaga Kiln boxed dish set by Tsuboshima Dohei (1929-2013). At age 17, Dohei apprenticed under the eclectic salaryman-turned master potter Kawakita Handeishi following World War II, becoming his top pupil. He took over the kiln in Tsu, Mie prefecture following the death of Handeishi in 1963. Cedar box with hand painted mark and inscription translating to "red painted long plate, Hironaga kiln". Box opens to reveal five compartments, each with stoneware dish featuring "Kenzan wave" pattern in red on a grey-blue glaze ground. Each dish in good condition and measures 9.25" L x 4.5" W approx. Box measures 8" H x 5.5" L x 11" W approx.
