Description:

Six-piece solid cast aluminum abstract Modernist wall sculpture, circa late 1950's - early 1960's. Attributed to Val Welman (1921-2013, Arizona / Seattle) Commissioned for the exterior of a commercial building next to Seattle Center, right near the heart of the Century 21 Exposition. No apparent artist signature. Two largest pieces (3' 3" x 6' 3" x 4.5" D and 4' 10" x 9' 11" x 5 1/2" D approx.) with mounting clips to sit 1 1/4" and 2" from the wall. Four additional pieces flush mount to wall and were arranged around and under two larger pieces. Appears in excellent original condition with expected light weathering / patina / some exterior paint drips, etc. Welman was professor emeritus of the University of Washington from 1954 - 1983, where he taught design, drawing, illustration and commercial art. He was recipient of awards from local shows and galleries including the Henry Art Gallery and Woessner Gallery.
