Large Joseon Dynasty Korean Buddhist Painting of Amitabha. Joseon Dynasty, ca. 18th century. A particularly large work constructed of five vertical panels of sized silk, the largest at center depicting Amida Buddha seated on a lotus throne with hands in teaching posture, flanked by attendants gwan-eum (Guanyin) and dae-seji (Mahasthamaprapta) holding blooming lotuses with feet supported by lotus pedestals. Fierce guardians protect and uphold the Buddhist teachings, with swords ready by their sides, stand in front of bodhisattvas and wise teachers who have now ascended to the Pure Land alongside their savior. Mounted to a silk and paper backing, set into unglazed wood frame. With areas of expected cracking to mineral pigment, small losses and staining to some areas such as faces at upper margins and copper green halos and at left of Dae Seji. Small hole tear by lower left corner. Painting 54.5" x 64"; 58.5" x 68.5" overall with frame.
