Japanese carved wood portrait of a Buddhist Priest named Ososhi. Early Edo period, 17th or early 18th century. Finely carved depiction of an ascetic with considerable attention to articulating the sunken cheekbones, subtle curvature of the head and facial expression. With incised gilt and red lacquer floral elements to robe. Inscripton to underside in ink. With expected wear to lacquer and surface; small split to front section of robe; small possible early repair to lower left side of robe. 14" H x 13.5" x 9.5". Previously sold by Gump's San Francisco, with accompanying envelope and letter, catalog no. 4D 39805.
