Description:

An Antique Hesquiaht (Nuu-chah-nulth) basket woven by Virginia Tom. Woven bark with fiber handle likely a later addition. Some expected losses from use and wear; area of rim re-wrapped; in very good condition overall. Illustrated in "Tradition & Change in the Northwest Coast" by Ruth Kirk, p. 15. Virginia was wearing this basket in Edward Curtis' 1915 photograph "The Seaweed Gatherer". Acquired from Alice Paul, daughter of Virginia in 1986, as per consignor. 11.5" x 14" x 18".
