Description:

Antique circa 19th century bronze statue depicting the Greek myth of Niobe (daughter of Tantalus) in a desperate state while being punished for her arrogance. Francesco da Sant'Agata was active at the turn of 15th and 16th centuries in Padua. Examples of his Niobe sculptures are housed in the Bode Museum in Berlin and in the Wallace Collection in London. Solid cast bronze with aged patina; some expected surface wear, etc. No apparent foundry mark or signature. Mottled brown marble base with pronounced cream color vein. Total height 11 3/4". Bronze 9" H. Base 2 3/4" H x 2 5/8" x 2 5/8".
