Antique Japanese surveying instrument with inscribed wood box, ca. 19th century. Instument made of brass, with glass crystal, lid, and gimballed support with tubular handle. Handcarved custom box with handpainted calligraphic inscriptions, with two seals of the calligrapher presumeably at lower left. Instrument with some black residue on lid, box with a crack and some fading to inscription. Instrument measures 1.5" W, 3.75" diameter, 9" L with handle approx. Box measures 2" H x 10.5" L x 5.25" W approx.
