African Baoule Tribe Harvest Dance Mask, Ivory Coast, circa. 1940. Dance competitions were held between neighboring villages at which these masks were worn, masks allow closer contact with the supernatural world. This mask is an idealized representation of a prominent member of the community. This hand made wooden mask is beautifully carved with smooth surfaces to represent healthy skin with detailed carving to the coiffure and scarifications. These masks were commissioned by a man to honor a woman's beauty and dance skills. Includes custom stand and plaque, the left tip of the coiffure has damage otherwise in excellent condition. Mask measures approximately 19" high, 8" wide and 6.5" deep. Measures 24.5" with stand.
