"The Fencers", 1901. Large scale hand tinted photograph of two "Gibson Girl" women in risque fencing costumes (with heart targets) posed on bench. In negative "COPYRIGHT 1901 BY JAMES ARTHUR" lower right corner. Good clear image on albumen type papaer mounted to heavy cardstock (wood grain "shadow" toning marks from original wood panel back). Good condition; small loss to lower left corner and some toning from previous framing to outer 3/8" of edges. 16" x 20". Mat 25.75" x 29". Arthur (1855-1912) was active in Detroit and was known for his photography featuring women. His work was popular with companies like Brown & Bigelow for calendars and prints. He was married to the prominent American suffragist Clara Arthur.
