Description:

"Charlotte at the Tomb of Werther", after a brush drawing by Mimi Waidmansdorf, 1792. The scene refers to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther", first published in 1774. However, it is not an illustration of the novel, but a fictional scene, since the novel ends with Werther's suicide. Glass broken in 6 pieces (image in good condition with only tiny losses to painted surface; all pieces present) and recently reset under TruGaurd glass in original gilt frame (some repaired damage) by Baas Art Gallery & Framing, Seattle. 13 1/4" dia. frame opening; 16 1/8" dia. frame.
