Description:

The Kuba Bwoom mask appears mostly at funerals to honor a deceased member of the men's initiation society. Although it is often referred to as a royal mask, it may represent a prince, a commoner who defies the authority of the king, or because of its bulging forehead- a Tshwa Pygmy, who are considered the original owners of the land. The mask has no eyeholes; the wearer gazes out of the bored nostrils. The art mask is hand carved wood embellished with cowrie shells, beads, thin copper sheeting, goatskin and hair. Very good condition, shows normal wear for age and material to create excellent patina, includes metal stand. Mask measures approximately 18" tall, 9" wide and 15" deep. Measures 26" with the custom made black painted heavy steel stand. From a long time collector of African art and artifacts.
