"VUE DE SALEM". Hand colored vue d'optique copper plate engraving by Balthazar Frederic Leizelt, for "Collection des Prospects," published in Augsburg, circa 1770s. A vue d'optique is designed to be looked at through an optical viewer which created an illusion of depth in the scene. The image's title is printed backwards to accommodate the use of mirrors as part of the illusion in a zograscope or similar device. Even toning, light foxing spots to paper, dark foxing spots to each corner, signs of age, etc. Mounted to presentation mat (16.75" x 21.5) with paper tape hinges at upper corners. Image 10" x 15.5" approx. Paper 12.5" x 17".
